In Guizhou, China, Elie Antoniadis photographs the lives of several Miao communities. Preparations for festivals, public gatherings and everyday encounters provide the starting points for a study of cultural transmission and change.

Developed through repeated visits to the same communities and families, the series brings together portraits, collective scenes and landscapes. It considers how inherited practices find a place in contemporary lives, through the gestures, relationships and choices of the people photographed.

Miao is a chapter of Civilization, a long-term photographic project concerned with cultural continuity and transformation.
